Character

Name: Chell
Fandom: Portal
Gender: Female
Age: 23 (plus the many years/decades/centuries she was in stasis, but is biologically and physically 23)
Time Period: After the end of Portal 2
Wing Color: Orange
History: Chell's bio on the Portal Wiki
Personality: Chell is one tough cookie. It's unknown how long she was in the Aperture Science labs before she began testing, but she probably spent a good deal of time deprived of human contact, only interacting with robots. Because of this, she hardly speaks. She is able to speak, but has developed such a cold exterior from being a test subject and enduring psychological torment from robots for so long that she has nothing to say. She knows that you can't reason with a robot, that they probably feed off what people say.

So, basically, Chell refuses to take anyone's crap, and she has an incredible will to survive. When GLaDOS says many things to Chell through her testing, calling her fat, mocking the possible fact that she was abandoned at birth, calling her a murderer, Chell refuses to give into it. She is likely thinking horrible things about wanting to mutilate these robots, but never protests what they say. Instead, she takes action.

Chell is not stupid. When she's being tested, she knows that there are no observers watching her. She knows that something is amiss, particularly seeing as the only thing interacting with her is GLaDOS. Then later on, things get worse as Chell finds Doug Rattmann's sketches on the walls, warning her of GLaDOS's malicious intent, but Chell decides to play along with GLaDOS for the time being, knowing she probably couldn't escape the lab at that time. She knows when to play along and when not to, so she will go along with a plan if it seems beneficial at the moment, or until she can think of her own plan.

When GLaDOS finally tries to kill her by incinerating her, that's when Chell has had the last straw, and goes to find the evil computer and kill her. Even though GLaDOS attempts to dissuade Chell by saying that it was "all part of the test," and that there is to be a party and cake for her, Chell ignores it. Due to this, Chell is not likely to believe any good intentions people have, especially if something has warned her beforehand of possible evil intent. And it's not like Chell just decided to escape from the lab. She knew she had to dismantle GLaDOS before she had a hope of getting away. Besides, she knew that this computer was clearly no good. If Chell was going to be incinerated, there were probably other test subjects before her that had suffered the same fate (as far as she knew), so she had to put a stop to it.

Chell has good intentions, but she is stubborn and tough. She dismantled GLaDOS, and when she encountered the newly revived GLaDOS later on with Wheatley, she wanted to get back at her by switching GLaDOS's core with Wheatley's. She knew it would not only piss GLaDOS off, but that it would be beneficial for her, and she could finally escape from the lab, as Wheatley had seemed trustworthy at the time (ha ha ha, she was so wrong). Even though she does not like robots, when it came down to the two of them: one who genuinely wanted to help her and one who wanted to kill her, Chell had no choice but to go along with the one who seemed to want to help her.

But then their roles were reversed and Chell had to help GLaDOS out later on to defeat Wheatley. Chell helped GLaDOS because she was promised her freedom, and also because if she couldn't escape from the lab, it would explode (due to Wheatley being incompetent). She didn't have much choice there either.

But her will to live is incredible. When it seemed Wheatley was going to kill her with his trap, she stood up, grabbed her Portal gun, and kept fighting. She even shot a portal at the moon, knowing that she could possibly die from space exposure, but she still held on, letting Wheatley be ejected into space. And she survived, because she was incredibly determined to do so. And she wanted her freedom. Also, her will to live is indeed so strong that GLaDOS finally willingly frees her at the end of Portal 2 because attempting to kill her is just "too difficult."

Chell is not a complete Space Racist though. She does care about the Companion Cube. They are sentient but abused by GLaDOS, immediately to be euthanized after use. Chell is extremely reluctant to incinerate the Cube, but sees no other way out of the room, so she does euthanize it. GLaDOS mocks her for it later, but Chell is able to ignore it, knowing that GLaDOS was the one who forced her to get rid of it.

However, when Chell finally gains her freedom at the end of Portal 2, the Cube she euthanized is given back to her, having survived the incinerator, and she takes it with her. Part of the reason she does like the Cube is because Doug Rattmann had scribbled on the walls about the virtues of the Cube. Chell escapes the lab with the Cube in tow, rescuing it from any further abuse by GLaDOS. It's possible Chell also developed an attachment to the Cube, since it was the only thing she interacted with for so long that didn't abuse her.

Even though she develops a closer connection to GLaDOS in Portal 2, she's still obviously does not trust the AI, especially since Chell thinks that GLaDOS deleted her human component, Caroline, from her system, which is the thing that gave GLaDOS any compassion she had for Chell. Her relationship with GLaDOS, though, is still complicated. It wouldn't be out of the question for Chell to have developed some sort of Stockholm Syndrome complex toward her, but with Chell's stubbornness, it's probably not completely likely. But GLaDOS did serenade Chell on her way out of the lab, calling her "my dear," and "beautiful," and such. Chell probably has a mix of emotions concerning GLaDOS, but would be very, very, very reluctant to trust her again. She only trusted GLaDOS against Wheatley because Chell would have exploded otherwise.

So basically, Chell's will to survive outweighs the hatred she has for robots. However, she still refuses to speak with them. Her actions speak louder than words, after all. Chell will probably not speak much in Luceti unless she develops a strong connection with someone. She probably won't look at all happy either, not wanting to trust anyone. Are these people in Luceti the evil scientists who locked her up in the Aperture Science labs? Are they like Cave Johnson: completely mad with power? She will be happy to be out in the fresh air, there's no doubt about that. But interaction with people will be minimal.

Strengths: For physical strengths, Chell is no slouch. She is probably more flexible and agile than the average human, due to the strange testing environments she's been able to survive. Obviously, a great strength she has is her incredible will to survive. Even when she doesn't know how to escape a dire situation, she will do all she can to survive. She was able to survive almost being sucked out of a portal into space, but she held on for dear life. While she may not have survived if GLaDOS hadn't rescued her, she would not have even gotten that far if she hadn't had that will. Also, she stands up and continues to fight even when Wheatley has gravely injured her.

Chell is also not gullible. GLaDOS will speak of cakes and parties for Chell, but she doesn't buy into it. She can see through that front, and continues to persevere. However, Chell will go along with what a robot says if it's otherwise a life or death situation. She went along with Wheatley in the beginning of Portal 2 because she would have died otherwise, and GLaDOS had already tried to kill her. Otherwise, though, Chell is able to ignore the drivel that comes from robots. First GLaDOS in Portal 1 and parts of Portal 2, then she was able to ignore Wheatley's drivel when he became the primary antagonist of Portal 2.

Chell is also very smart and quick to adapt. Many of the testing chambers Chell was subjected to were difficult to figure out logically, and if she couldn't figure them out, she would have likely died (due to the acidic floors). She is easily able to use the Portal gun to her advantage, using it against the one who gave it to her, GLaDOS. She is also able to use the gels Cave Johnson invented to her advantage, using them to defeat Wheatley.

Weaknesses: Chell is very stubborn and hard to trust others. She will trust someone if it's otherwise a life or death situation (as explained before), but otherwise she is going to shut others out and not buy anything they say. She will not speak easily either, due to having nasty robots as her only interaction for a long time. She may write to herself, but it's unlikely she will make many voice or text posts on her journal. If she does, they will likely be very concise.

Chell is also in survival mode most of the time. She will probably assume most people are out to get her, and will most likely attempt to find whoever trapped her in Luceti, kill them, and attempt to escape. While this is obviously a much better situation than being trapped in the Aperture Science labs, she's still not free, and that annoys her. So, she's not going to easily settle down. She's going to fight. This is a weakness because it's another reason why she will have a ton of difficulty connecting to others.

Chell may also make a wrong decision when under pressure. She hadn't considered the ramifications of putting Wheatley in charge of the Labs in lieu of GLaDOS. This was partially because she did not know that Wheatley was designed specifically to be an idiot who feeds GLaDOS useless information, and of course partially because she didn't want a murderous AI in charge of a facility. She thought she could escape easier with Wheatley in charge, but it made things worse. So, in a life or death situation, it's very possible Chell could make the wrong decision under pressure without thinking.

This part is obvious, but Chell is not going to trust AI at all. Any robots she may come across in Luceti she will immediately dislike. The only way she'd trust one is in a life or death situation, but otherwise she is a total Space Racist.

Samples

First Person: (Please note, this is an introspective piece, as Chell is not likely to talk much. If I have not done this correctly, I'm very sorry, and I will request a Q&A instead.)

My freedom. I finally have it, but is it truly freedom? It's almost kind of funny. I spent all that time trying to escape out into the open world, only to find myself trapped somewhere else. It's better than the damned Aperture Science labs, though. At least there's room to roam around, and fresh air. But... why do I have to have these wings? It's not like they do anything. They're just a useless extension that I want to get rid of. I want to get out. I want to be truly free. I can't be free if I'm forced to be here. And... GLaDOS is here too. Am I just cursed to remain in her clutches then for the rest of my life?! Is this even her doing? If it is, at least she was kind enough to entrap me in an open area. And I haven't had to do any tests...

Third Person: Chell didn't know who had sent her here. Part of her suspected it was GLaDOS, but things seemed off with her. There were no tests, no Portal guns, nor were there any attempts at killing with turrets or neurotoxin. And, Chell didn't feel like GLaDOS's eye was perpetually on her constantly. Whenever Chell found out who had trapped her here, she was going to find them, and she was going to demand release. And the demanding may require violence.

For now, though, Chell would play along with this place. After all, it wasn't a torture chamber. Quite the opposite, in fact. There were trees. Actual trees. A forest, even! The sunshine was here, and there was an actual nighttime. It was almost like a dream come true in some aspects. Chell had longed for this, so she made the most of it.

During the day, she had traversed to the forest, soaking in the fresh air, listening to the quiet breeze as it rustled the trees. She had even seen, in her shock, some wildlife. A deer. She remembered GLaDOS taunting her by saying she had seen a deer outside. Chell had ignored it and said nothing as usual, but it did make her blood boil being kept underground. But now... she had seen that deer. She had seen squirrels, birds, and a variety of creatures. It had felt like an eternity since she last saw any sort of living creature.

Now it was nighttime. Chell should have gone to sleep, but she couldn't. The moon was too beautiful, too bright, too there. The stars were shining, billions of miles away, and her eyes glimmered with them as she took in the whole view. The Companion Cube sat beside her, her one friend, presumably enjoying the view as well. At least Chell hoped it was. She didn't even know why she cared, but the Cube was the one thing during all this time that didn't betray her, that didn't lie to her, that didn't hurt her. Who else could she trust?

So, she leaned on the Cube, with her sleepy eyes gazing at the beautiful night sky. It had been so long since she experienced nighttime. She didn't want to waste it now. But she steadily grew more and more sleepy, in a trance from the stars. Sleeping out here wouldn't be too bad... as long as it was under the night sky.

Final question: is Chell's Companion Cube okay as an item? Even though it's technically sentient, it has absolutely no personality to speak of, and essentially serves as a weighted cube with no purpose other than to provide company and be something to stand on or something to weigh buttons down. So essentially since the Cube is a personal item, it would be found in a small shop around the village, I guess?
